New York City is far from the only source of Caribbean happenings on the East Coast, and Connecticut\'s West Indian Social Club of Hartford is proof of that.
Once again, the organization has put together an impressive lineup of entertainment and activities for the summer, including the Miss West Indian Scholarship Pageant, a Haitian Night, Jamaica Night, Guyanese Night, and Celebration Week activities all taking place at Hartford\'s West Indian American Center, 3340 Main St.
The 45th annual Miss West Indian Scholarship Pageant on July 29 at the center.
The clubs HHAITIAN Night is on Aug. 5 at the West Indian American Center. There is no cover charge for the affair, which will feature music by Jean Maxon.
JAMAICA Night will be held Aug. 7 at the West Indian American Center, starring Don Minott and the High Voltage Band, Teddy Brown, Junior Holt, Goochie Flava, Kevin Slaughter, Trevor Da Engineer and DJ Ricky D of radio station WZMX (93.7 FM) and music by Magnum Sound.
GUYANESE Night follows on Aug. 8, with performances by Terry Gajraj, Prak 2, H20, Sexi Marisa & the Bakanal Band. DJ music by Wasine. Cover charge is $10.

A show about the legacy of early Calypso (the Kaiso) featuring music, dance and storytelling. This 90-minute musical journey is divided into four segments with scripted narration portraying the evolution of Calypso music from its folk roots to modern-day variations. The show features five musicians, four singers and a narrator.
\"Roots and Rhythms\" focuses on indigenous Caribbean drumming rhythms as a foundation for the development of the Calypso music as well as Spanish and French musical elements that influenced the structure and instrumentation of early Calypso (Kaiso).
\"The Winds of Change\" explores the incorporations of brass and wind elements in Calypso featuring Jazz Calypso and Calypso versions of popular music of the 30s, 40s, and 50s.
\"The People\'s Voice\" captures the lyrical and story-telling strength of Calypso featuring best work (humourous, social and political commentary) from the 60\'s and 70\'s by Sparrow, Kitchener and other major composers.
The Finale features a combined ensemble of the three other segments exploring the modern variations of Calpyso: Soca, Chutney, Rapso and Ringbang.

The undisputed Soca King of Trinidad and Tobago, Machel Montano has etched his name among the elite in the music industry. Machel and his band Xtatik have been the premier soca band in the Caribbean for more than a decade and have established themselves as the leading draw at major events in New York City, Miami, Toronto and London, and throughout the Caribbean.
In 1986, Machel appeared on Star Search in Hollywood and was described as the Stevie Wonder of Soca. At the age of twelve, Machel became the first Trinidadian and youngest Entertainer to win the Caribbean Song Festival. In 1991, at sixteen, he won the Young Kings Competition.He and his band Xtatik have won numerous awards at Carnival: Best Playing Music Band, Party Vocalist of the Year, Road March King and many more.
Their album Heavy Duty has been described as one of the best selling Soca Albums ever.
