Terry Goes Bollywood
Who was the first singer from the Caribbean to sing at the Bollywood Music Awards? It was Terry Gajraj, a country boy from a little known village along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Guyana. Terry’s ancestors came to Guyana in 1838 and in 2000 (the Millennium). Terry was able to bridge that gap by performing with Bollywood’s elite stars at the Nassau Coliseum. Terry’s performance of “Saki Boom” was a scene stealer and highlight that night. Shah Rukh Khan and troupe danced “Saki Boom” on their Tour in Trinidad and an Indian version of “Saki Boom” was featured in a subsequent Bollywood movie. Terry’s Bollywood performance that night was the pinnacle of his humble career. In the front row smiling and cheering enthusiastically was AR Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire). AR Rahman later invited Terry to his dressing room and expressed an interest in Caribbean Music. AR Rahman also suggested that Terry try Hindi songs. Terry took that advice to heart and finally in 2009 Terry would be the first Chutney Singer to release an entire CD of his favorite Filmi songs. Terry has done these Filmi songs in true Caribbean style, staying true to his roots and culture, as he bridges the gap between East and West, between the Caribbean and India, between his Ancestors and their great, great, great grandchildren. Our Ancestors sailed across the Kala Paani in 1838 from India to Guyana. Now lets take a trip back to India on a musical voyage from the Caribbean to Mother India
